Carpe Diem, Chhattisgarh!

It’s been a year since my last post. The reasons are obvious.

During the last 2½ years, I’ve been travelling relentlessly, by foot (almost 2000 kilometers) and by car (more than 200,000 kilometers). I’ve addressed more than 4000 public meetings, both large and small. I’ve been arrested, tear-gassed, water-cannoned and baton-charged at least 200 times in every district and block headquarters of Chhattisgarh.

And to top it all, Richa, my poor wife of fifteen months- whose greatest attribute, according to me, has been her stratospheric tolerance- has not only had to put up with my constant absences but also the increasing invasions of our fast-shrinking marital space on the rare occasions that I’m around.

Politics, for me, isn’t so much about persons as it is about issues. In particular, those issues that affect citizens most directly: like when the state uproots them from their homes and hearths at the behest of powerful industrial lobbies; when it fails to protect their right to life- their right not to get killed, their right not to get raped repeatedly, their right not to die of poisonous air and water; when it time and again betrays their faith, taking them for fools; when it brazenly turns into an extortionist and a robber of the state-exchequer; when it under-sells to outsiders the land and its untold natural wealth, which their ancestors had so carefully preserved for them since time immemorial; when it over-charges them for things they shouldn’t have to pay for at all; when it willfully tries to turn an entire people into a generation of wife-beating drunks. To me, these ‘existential issues’ are infinitely more important than who occupies what position.

If I can, in some small way, contribute to an Awakening whereby the people of Chhattisgarh, especially its Youth, rise up to take charge of their destinies, I think my politics would have served its purpose.

Bhaiya, the efforts that you taken to strengthen Congress Party and specially the youth in Chhattisgarh is really commendable. You are following the foot steps of Uncle - only a strong hearted person and the one having a strong will power and zeal can do such hectic tours. After all travelling 2000 kms on foot is not a joke (its almost a return journey between Raipur - Mumbai). The journey that you started on 23rd May 2010 through "Youth Peace March" has steadily progressed and today the entire State is with you. I too was fortunate enough to attend this first political programme of yours which till date has been the only political programme that I attended.

The State Government has lost every right to be in power; a Government that cannot protect the fundamental rights of its citizens and which is hell bent on making money at the cost of its people and the natural resources of its state does not have any moral right to continue in power for even a single day. For the past 9 years, Government has existed only on papers in Chhattisgarh and its sole aim is to make its pockets deeper by hook or by crook.

I am sure that your pain taking efforts will be duly rewarded by Almighty. With your efforts, Congress should be able to regain power in Chhattisgarh in the coming elections and you too should create victory record just like Uncle.

As regards the second paragraph of your post, this further strengthens what I had mentioned to you at Mumbai on 5th January 2012 and then subsequently at Banaglore. I hope you recall that I had said - "Bhaiya your are very lucky that you have got such a wonderful and caring life partner. Richa Bhabhi is really very down to earth and very kind from heart". Because of Bhabhi's kindness, I had saluted her on 13th January 2012 when I had seen you off at Bangalore airport and both of you were climbing the escalator for security check. This post has restrengthened what I had said on those two occasions. Bhaiya, through you I too have got such a great Bhabhi (sister); I thank you from the core of my heart for this.

Bhaiya, I wish you all the very best for the important battle that the people of Chhattisgarh will be fighting towards this year end and for which Uncle and You will be our commanders . With such strong commanders, I am sure victory will be ours !!!!!
